My friend keeps taunting me with his Core 2 Duo based HP notbook. Even "Xtreme Notebooks" has a Core 2 Duo model.

    This sucks.

Your friend sounds like a dork. "OOOH, my HP has a Core 2 Duo! I AM SO l33t!"

    Give me a break.

Was 129.9 at Sainsburys, Hempstead (Kent, UK) until Thursday, went up to 130.9. Cobham Esso (on the M2 motorway) always used to be 1p cheaper but has now gone up to 133.9 (141.9 for diesel - ouch!) BUT:

Farthing Corner Services (BP) just after j4 on the M2, Kent - 138.9 for petrol, 145.9 for diesel!

Apple has announced a partnership with a number of airlines (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/nov/14ipod.html) to provide in-flight iPod integration during flights.

According to the press release, these six airlines will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which power and charge their iPods during flight and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on the their seat back displays. The press release did not specify whether the iPod integration would be a first-class accommodation, as presumably that designation would be up to the individual airlines.

    - No spam management
    - No full data set for the Address Book (still can't note bdays, etc.)
    - No iCal integration with a fully editable calendar

Yup, I mirror those complaints. There is spam filtering, but I personally have no way to change the settings, I'd like to make them a little more restrictive. One thing I notice about the Address Book is the way it ranks phone numbers for display. This was a problem in the old Webmail as well.

The new Address Book search in the mailbox window is cool, but when it displays the phone number, it only shows one of the phone numbers for the contact, and it doesn't let you choose which one. It ranks the numbers as 1. Mobile, 2. Home, and 3. Work. So if I want the work number to display for a contact, the only option is to not list a mobile or home number for them! Even worse, it doesn't tell you which one it's using, either. All them would need to do is add a faint (m), (h), or (w) notation like they do other places in Webmail.

I'd also like to see screen real estate used a little better. The bar with "Feedback" "Prefrences" and the language is a waste, moving those to buttons on the main toolbar would be better, and I don't need the top with the Apple site tabs, or the links to the other .Mac areas, either. I tried to remove them with Firefox but I got a blank area at the bottom of the window the same size then, so I didn't gain any usuable space, also this removed the only Logout button on the page.

I do really like the new webmail overall in the end. Much less clicking needed to get things done. But it does need some polishing.

And the lack of a web-editable calendar function is just dumb. I sometimes think of just paying the $20 a year fee for Yahoo Mail Plus to get rid of the ads and transfer everything over ot that. Their calandar is a real must have for me. And I would get more reliable email service, but I want IMAP access.

Edit: The bar separating the message list from the preview pane can be moved up and down, but the position is not remembered and resets after you log out or go to the address book.

There's a "Get Mail" button. I hope I don't have to push that to check for new messages anymore. I would expect an webmail system using "the latest technologies" to have an AJAX interface and retrieve new messages periodically on it's own without having to reload the entire page.

Wouldn't it be lovely if the new iPhones ship with 32 gb (as the base phone) and 64 gb (as the higher capacity phone)?

    One could hope...
:DI fully expect this. With a bump for the $99 iPhone to 16 GB. There's no reason not to do this. In fact, I think it was more or less confirmed that the only reason the iPhone 4 wasn't 64 GB had to do with some kind of patent issue or supply constraints due to anticompetitive practices (I forget exactly), which made the chips too scarce for production.

As for the Expose prototype, I agree with others. I think they dumped this multitasking interface because using the App icon made more sense given screen space limitations.

Hmm... I've held off on buying both a new phone and a new iPod for a while now, assuming that I'd want whatever phone Apple eventually comes out with, but the mention of battery life issues concerns me. If the battery goes dead on my iPod, no big deal, I don't listen to music until I charge it again. But if the battery goes dead on my phone, I could miss an important call. And if I have to monitor how much music I listen to to ensure that I can still receive calls, that might be a problem. Ideally, they could address this concern by having some software that told you well in advance that if you stop listening to music now, you still have so much time left on your phone.

No offense, but how many cell phone calls are really that important? None, given all the ones I overhear on a daily basis. :D

I could see a nifty little battery app on an iPod/iPhone device. Turn off music player when battery reaches x% or something like that.

In fact, DVD pricing is not the most important factor for Walmart and I suspect Target as well. Both companies employ sophisticated marketing techniques to draw customers into the store and get them to part with more money than they originally intended to spend. Brand-name promotions, item placements and even Walmart's "don't ask, don't tell" return policies are examples. The use of loss-leaders, selling products at a small loss, has proven to be one of the most powerful customer draws. DVDs are the numero-uno loss leader draw of most Walmarts, particularly those in the broad midsection of the country where it's often difficult to find a video rental store, much less a Tower, Borders or Virgin Atlantic store. I recently spent the summer in the Hill Country of Texas and became quite familiar with the Friday evening surge when customers would stream into a Walmart to pick up a DVD for the weekend and then decide to do a little additional shopping "seein' as they was there." I think the stores are rightfully fearful of the loss in foot traffic and the consequential loss of impulse purchases if movie downloads become popular. For the same reason, simply openning up an online store will not insulate them from losses since the profits accrued from DVD sales don't generally arise from the DVDs themselves, but from the additional shopping that is all but inevitable once you enter the store.

Yep, it's similar in Best Buy and other places with the weeks newest CD releases. Normally a few CDs are on a really good sale and others are not so competitively priced. Good thing I can control my impulses... for the most part.

Anyway, unlike my CD collection, I would be quite happy with a terrabyte unit to store all of my movies so I could just scroll through some list on the remote and playback any given movie for the evening-- or download something new. When the iService gives that to us, it will be quite nice.

    it was something like this....

ES: I am telling you Steve, if you use Bing as the default search engine it will be a HUGE mistake. Google is now, hip, and happening and we both know about the quality (both laugh) of MS products. C'mon we both know what the right choice is.

SJ: Eric, this is business. As you guys expand to other areas you are stepping on our toes. And now you ask me for a "favor"? How about a good ol fashioned "horse-trade"? We use your search engine and you drop out of the portable electronics game? Your stuff can't compete with ours anyway and it is only a matter of time. (ES looks hurt). Eric, you know me, I call it the way I see it and the situation is what it is.

ES: I'll think about it. I have to talk to our biz guys coz they are the ones who keep wanting us to expand into other areas. They are young and cocky and one guy even proposed a Google brand refrigerator coz it would be "cool". (both laugh)

SJ: What do you think of Flash???
ES: You mean here? Right now??!!
    SJ: Yea

They both stand up, shed their clothes and run off wearing only their Nikes.

Being a billionaire means total freedom.......

IMPORTANT The widget doesn't work at the moment, sorry. I'll try to fix it, one day ;) /IMPORTANT

    Hello folders and interested people.

I was thinking about a widget to display your folding efforts, a few days after my first thought i stumbled on this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=120057) thread. Apparently stubeeef had been thinking about this before i did.

Anyhow, here's (http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/FoldingTracker.wdgt.zip) the widget (current version 0.5b).
Please read this post through before reporting bugs :o.

The widget has been reported to work in Amnesty (http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm), a dashboard for 10.3.9 users (thx stubeeef for testing this)

    the front:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/front.png
    the bigger front:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/front_big.png
    the back:
    http://mr.yuru.be/widget/folding/back.png

    a small FAQ (lol frequently)

    Set up:
If your Mac didn't do it for you, put FoldingTracker.wdgt in /Library/Widgets
On the backside of the widget fill in your 'numeral user id' I should find a better name for this one.

How do I find this 'numeral user id'?
You can find it very easily by clicking on the extremeoverclocking.com logo. On the right side of the page fill in your folding username. If you found your username, klick it. A page containing your folding efforts will load.

I must say though, for criminals...things are looking up.

If you add friends and family only then shouldn't be a problem. If it is then you need to pick your friends more carefully and family you associate with.

All this image shows is that the person measuring the white iPhone 4 has no idea how to use a caliper. The idea of a caliper isn't to squeeze the crap out of whatever you're measuring. It is obvious that the in the right picture they are squeezing much harder just looking at the discoloration of the persons skin on their thumb.

I grew up on a pc and now I choose Mac because it's so much better in my opinion. Personally I'm not liberal and I'm not super conservative either. I odiously care about my appearance, and I'm not a vegetarian. I do like the Beatles though wherever that fits in. So I'm not anywhere near this statistic. Windows Is more complicated, but it would be fine if it wasn't slow, get viruses all the time, and when u click an app it doesn't take ten min to pop up (not to mention u get so frustrated u click it several time and then like 7 windows pop up). Personally this never happens to my Mac iknow my way a round both os's but I also own most apple products. I take care of the pc sitting in the basement my dad uses it for email when he is not on the iPad, so it doesn't get that much use but it slows down fast so we clean it out every year ( back what we need up and then wipe the thing). The pc is cheeper that is why most of the world uses them, there is a thiving computer repair business for a reason (not many for Mac). But whatever floats your boat I guess lol

A computer's best feature is its application, but the operating system that runs the applications should not be neglected.

    Windows is garbage.

Virtualizing Windows desktops will be like a bad sitcom - everybody is laughing except the ones who work on it.

Personally, I lean left-wing on some issues, right-wing on one or two issues. but prefer not being labeled as anything. For left-wing or right-wing, they're both part of a big turkey. I am an individual. I am a free man. Not a number. :D

My appearance could be better, but I'd rather get to work. Substance over style. Mac has a great look, but the OS is what counts the most.

PCs aren 't much cheaper once you add in support costs, not to mention adware, trialware, and other crapware that get preinstalled. And once info is added into the registry, it can (usually) be removed but the registry cannot be compacted. Bloat creeps in and reinstalling is inevitable, if performance is a concern. Even with Win7, which has bugs that SP1 hasn't fixed either...

OS X has a couple of foibles, but compared to Windows "it just works" is not an inaccurate statement and, quite frankly, is vastly superior to Windows.

Anybody remember when WalMart advertised that the products they sold were "Made in the USA"? Sad time my friends, sad times.

    Funny story on that.

The small town where I grew up had a Western Auto store. It was the place to buy all kind's of stuff, including bicycles. My family was friends with the family that owned the store, I heard this tale from the father.

After WalMart opened in our town, sales at the Western Auto slowed. The guy went down to WalMart to check out what they were doing. He found the same brand of bike he was selling, being retailed at 1-2% more than was paying for them. The next time the bike manufacturers rep came by, he asked him about this.

"Well", the sales rep said, "volume discount this, economies of scale that, efficiency the other".

"But my families store has been supporting your brand for 40 years, where's the loyalty?", or words to that effect.

"Well, times change", was the answer.

A year goes by, and the bike manufacturer rep is back at the WA, where he sees a good assortment his brands bike, including new models just released the previous month. He goes to the store owner and asks him "Where did you get these new bikes? You haven't place an order with us in 8 months"

    "I bought them at WalMart".

"Why would you do that? You can get them cheaper by buying them direct"

"Not a lot cheaper I couldn't. And I figure either WalMart is selling them for no profit, or you are. So by buying them at WalMart, I'm *********g one of you sons of bitches, and that makes me happy!"

Moral of the story? The bike manufacturer moved their production facilities over seas. The Western Auto is now a Beef O'Brady's.

At one point "Made in the USA" was a sweat shop on Saipan. I remember reading of cases where Walmart pressured manufacturers to move their operation overseas. They would offer the manufacturer a price on their product they (the manufacturer) could not make a profit on. When told so, Walmart told them, "just make it in China". So much for loyalty, loyalty to profits that is.
